Hayao Miyazaki’s latest movie Ponyo, inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid, will be in theaters August 14, 2009. It will be released on 800 screens across the country — the most for any Miyazaki film yet. It stars Noah Cyrus, Frankie Jonas, Cate Blanchett, Matt Damon, Tina Fey, Cloris Leachman, Liam Neeson, Lily Tomlin and Betty White.

Here’s the American poster for Disney’s release of Hayao Miyazaki’s latest movie Ponyo. The film was released in Japan last July, and managed to gross over $150 million. Ponyo tells the story of a baby goldfish who’s one wish is to be human. Cast members include Noah Cyrus, Cate Blanchett, Matt Damon, Tina Fey and Liam Neeson. Disney will release Ponyo in theaters on August 14.
Variety reports that Hayao Miyazaki’s ‘Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea’ pulled in $14.8 million in Japan over the three-day weekend of July 19-21, 2008.
The movie’s theme song soared to the number two spot on the Oricon pop chart,to which producer Toshio Suzuki commented “If the theme song is a hit, the movie is also a hit.”
